Mint Verbena Southside

Mint Verbena Southside

A simple gin-based (in this case, gin-alternative based) cocktail recipe that's mint-kissed with a touch of citrus.

There’s quite a history, too. Many unconfirmed reports of this cocktail's creation exist. Some say it came out of South Side Chicago during the prohibition era, others claim it comes from Southside Sportsmen's Club on Long Island. Manhattan's 21 Club also claims it as its own creation, where they serve it in a collins glass over ice with a mint sprig for garnish. Where ever it may have started, we’re happy it’s here.

INGREDIENTS:
  • 2 oz (1/4 cup) Bax Botanics Verbena
  • 1 oz (2 tbs) fresh lime juice
  • 3/4 oz (1 tbs + 1.5 tsp) Simple Syrup*
  • Handful fresh mint leaves
  • Mint or lemon verbena to garnish
INSTRUCTIONS:

Combine mint leaves and simple syrup in a shaker and muddle gently. Add lime juice and Bax Botanics Verbena and shake with ice about 5 seconds to chill. Double strain into a coupe glass and garnish with a fresh mint leaf or lemon verbena sprig.

VARIATIONS:

Follow the same instructions, but build the cocktail in a tall glass, add ice and top with club soda.

*SIMPLE SYRUP

Combine equal parts white sugar and warm water and stir or shake to dissolve. Allow to cool before use and store in the refrigerator.
